Following a disciplinary infraction last week, Arsenal has confirmed that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been deprived of the captain’s armband.
The 32-year-old was left out of the team for Saturday’s 3-0 win over Southampton, with manager Mikel Arteta admitting that the reason for his absence was disciplinary.
Following that, rumors circulated that Aubameyang could lose his captain’s armband, which he acquired from Granit Xhaka when the Swiss midfielder was also deprived of the honor.
Arsenal has confirmed that Aubameyang is no longer club captain, adding that the Gabonese international will miss Wednesday’s match against West Ham United owing to his “latest” club code violation.
“Following his latest disciplinary breach last week, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will no longer be our club captain, and will not be considered for selection for Wednesday’s match against West Ham United,” read a statement on the club’s official website.
“We expect all our players, particularly our captain, to work to the rules and standards we have all set and agreed. We are fully focused on tomorrow’s match.”
Aubameyang has four Premier League goals in 14 appearances for Arsenal this season, the last of which came on October 22.
Since his omission, the striker has been linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium, with Barcelona among the clubs considered to be keeping an eye on his position.
